Breeder Requirements

All breeders on the Approved Breeders List carry out heath testing on ALL breeding stock BEFORE breeding. All breeders hip and elbow score at an absolute minimum.

All breeders must DRSA both sire and dam and share the results with the breed club chairman and also have them entered the cane corso database. We only accept using one DRSA carrier in any mating ideally both parents will be all clear. Failure to share the results will result in removal from the approved breeders list.

Please speak to each breeder to know more about which specific health testing is carried out.

All Breeders on the Approved Breeders List also adhere to the following requirements:

-          Will only sell puppies/dogs where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life.

-          Will help with the re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.

-          Will supply written details of all dietary requirements

-          Will give guidance concerning responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home

-          Will ensure all puppies/dogs are microchipped with the new owners’ details

-          Will ensure that all relevant documents are provided to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant document at the earliest opportunity, if not available immediately

-          Will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind.

-          Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.

-          Will not supply puppies that have been cropped or docked which have been imported for third party selling.

-          Will not take a dog/puppy out of the UK for the purpose of cropping and docking unless legal to do so in country of origin.

-          Will not resell litters they have not bred.

-          Will not sell or breed from any dog/dogs will non-standard or merle patterning - patches of lighter colour appearing in the coat - is the result of the M gene in the dog. There are two alleles of this gene: M (merle) and m (non-merle), with merle (M) being dominant to non-merle (m). In some breeds, the effect of the merle allele (M) is termed ‘dapple’. Unfortunately, the effects of the merle allele (M) are not confined to coat patterning and it is known that there can be an increased risk of impaired hearing and sight associated with it, particularly in dogs that are homozygous for M (dogs that carry two copies of the M allele). As the merle colour is not a naturally occurring colour in this breed, and in view of the health concerns relating to the merle gene, the Kennel Club will not accept the registration.

-          The aim of breeders should always be to improve the quality and soundness of their stock and to produce healthy, typical Corso, which conform as closely as possible to the Breed.

-          Dogs and bitches used for breeding should be of good quality and healthy with stable temperament, which is an important feature of the breed.

-          Dogs and bitches suffering from or known to be carrying any hereditary defect ought not to be used for breeding. Breeders should co-operate with other breeders, especially, but also with clubs and veterinary bodies, in an effort to eradicate hereditary defects.

-          A bitch to be used for breeding should be at least 2 years of age, before mating for the first time. In addition, the decision to breed should depend on the maturity, both physical and mental, of the bitch to support a litter. She should not be mated once she has reached the age of 8 years.

-          A bitch should not normally be bred from on two consecutive seasons. Four litters is sufficient in a bitch’s breeding life, and every effort should be made to ensure her a comfortable and happy lifetime thereafter.

-          Stud dog owners have a great responsibility towards the breed and should assure themselves that the dog to be used is as good an example of the breed as possible. The Stud should be over the age of 2 years of age and the Stud owner should ensure the breeding bitch requirements have also been reached as outlined above.

-          All dogs and bitches ideally should be BVA hip and elbow tested the Kennel Club do not recognise Penn Hip or OFA results

Breach of these provisions may result in expulsion from club membership.
